The common cold is where most people first try homeopathy — and for good reason. A well-chosen remedy, taken within the first 24 hours, can often cut a 7-day cold down to 2–3 days. Below are the seven remedies every home should have, and how to pick between them.

1. Aconite — the first-hour remedy

Use Aconite 30C at the very first sign of a cold, especially after exposure to a cold, dry wind. Key features: sudden onset, restlessness, fear, dry hot skin. Repeat every 30 minutes for 2–3 hours. If symptoms continue developing (runny nose, cough), move on to the next remedy.

2. Belladonna — sudden high fever

For sudden high fever with a bright red face, burning hot skin, throbbing head, and dilated pupils. Especially useful in children. Belladonna 30C every 1–2 hours until the fever breaks.

3. Ferrum Phosphoricum — low-grade fever, slow onset

When the cold creeps on slowly with fatigue, pale cheeks turning suddenly red, and a mild fever, Ferrum Phos 6X or 30C is gentler than Belladonna and well-suited to anemic or delicate patients.

4. Pulsatilla — thick yellow-green discharge

When the cold has settled in with thick, bland, yellow-green mucus, and the patient is weepy, thirstless, and feels better in open air — Pulsatilla 30C, 2–3 times a day.

5. Nux Vomica — stuffy blocked nose

Blocked nose at night, runny by day. Sneezing attacks, chilly, irritable, often from overwork and late nights. Nux Vomica 30C before bed and on waking.

6. Allium Cepa — streaming watery nose

Like peeling onions: burning, watery nasal discharge; bland, non-burning tears from the eyes. Sneezing in a warm room. Allium Cepa 30C as needed.

7. Bryonia — dry, painful cough

Hard, painful, dry cough that makes the patient hold the chest. Worse from any motion; better lying still. Dry mouth, thirst for large amounts of cold water. Bryonia 30C every 2–4 hours.

How to actually use these remedies

  • Keep a 30C kit at home.
  • Take pellets on a clean (not minty) mouth. Avoid coffee, strong mints, and camphor while dosing.
  • Dissolve 3 pellets under the tongue (don't swallow whole).
  • Repeat every 1–4 hours in acute illness. As symptoms improve, stretch the interval. Stop when you feel clearly better.
  • If there is no improvement in 24 hours, reconsider the remedy choice or consult a homeopath.

When to see a doctor

  • Fever above 39°C (102°F) persisting beyond 48 hours
  • Chest pain, difficulty breathing
  • Severe headache with stiff neck
  • Symptoms worsening after day 5
  • Any severe illness in an infant under 3 months

Homeopathy works alongside conventional medicine — never a substitute for medical evaluation when warning signs appear.
